Daily Challenge for Sunday 10-23-11

Today our challenge has nothing to do with cleaning the house. It is Sunday and Sunday is family day. So our challenge for today is to spend some quality time with our families. Is that a challenge? Yes, it can be! Turn off the T.V., the computer, the video games, and give the texting a rest. I know that’s not always an easy task, but try your best.

Today my little sister is getting married! So it is a very special day for me. I will have all of my family and my closest friends all together in one place! All to celebrate my sisters special day, what a blessing. We even have family from Connecticut here! So it definitely is going to be a family day for me.

If you are anywhere near the San Diego area and are not sure what to do with your family today, one of my favorite places to drive to is Julian. Pack the fam in the car and drive up to Julian! Julian is a small mountain town with restaurants and shops. Our favorite things to do once we are there is to have lunch at the Candied Apple Bakery (they have the best brussel sprout soup and maccaroon cookies), get a piece of pie at Mom’s Pies and to do a little shopping (emphasis on the little, shopping is not my husbands favorite thing). The kids like to ride in the horse-drawn buggy, and to stop at the old fashion candy store. It is even apple picking time right now! There are many orchards that allow you to walk around and pick your own apples. We have competitions to see who can find the biggest apple! Whatever you do, make special memories today! After all that is what matters most in life, the special moments we share with our loved ones.

Have a great day!

A good deal on pumpkins

Someone asked me earlier today, where could they get a pumpkin for a good deal. So I thought I would share with you what I told her. Smart & Final has pumpkins for $2.99 I have seen them and they are a descent size. Food 4 Less is advertising pumpkins for $2.98 which sounds like a good deal, but I have not seen them. Either one will probably work fine.

Halloween Candy Bags

I don’t know about everyone elses kids but my kids are a bit pass carrying a big plastic pumpkin Halloween night. So we decided to make our own Halloween Candy Bags! Plus this was so much more fun for them. Here is a list of items you will need to make your own Halloween Candy Bags.

  • A plain bag (I found our bags at Micheals for $1.00)
  • Fabric paints and Puffy paints (if you don’t already have these you can buy some at Micheals or Wal-mart)
  • Stickers, Ribbons, or anything else you can find to decorate it ( I found really cute reflector stickers at Wal-mart for $0.84)

I helped my 6-year-old with the writing on his bag but my 11-year-old was able to do hers all on her own. We used a pencil to write what we wanted first then went over that with the puffy paint. Then we used the pencil to draw the candy corn and the pumpkins on the bag. Then used the fabric paint to paint the candy corn and pumpkins in. They finished them off with stickers and ribbons. I think not only did they have fun making the bags but are both very happy with how they turned out.

It’s saturday, the kids are home, and there’s games to go to! We don’t have a whole lot of time to spend on the house. So we are going to keep it easy today!

  • Strip the beds and wash the sheets and bedding and yes remake the beds once everything is clean.
  • Have the kids walk around and pick up all of their belongings. If you don’t have kids walk around and pick up all of your belongings.

Daily Deals for 10-21-11

Today I am going to head over to Rite Aid. I have $10.00 in UP Rewards that expires tomorrow and I can’t let that happen. If you don’t already know Right Aid has a program called UP Rewards. When you buy certain products you will get a coupon on your receipt to be used on your next purchase. Every week there is different products that offer those rewards. Check in your weekly circular for the qualifying products. With some clever planning you can buy the products that offer the rewards first on one separate order. Then on a different order you can buy anything else you might have needed and use your reward coupon, or you can save it for the next time you need something at Rite Aid. Which is what I did in this case, but then you run the risk of letting them expire. I hope this wasn’t confusing! One thing I’ve learned with couponing is that you learn as you go.

Today I am looking for:

  • Blistex Cold & Allergy Lip Balm 0.15oz. – The price – you pay $1.49 but you get an UP Reward for $1.49 so it’s like getting it for FREE!
  • Revlon Beauty Tools 40% off – The price – You should be able to find a beauty tool for around $1.79 after the 40% off. You will get an UP Reward for $2.00 so it’s like getting it for FREE plus a $0.21 profit!
  • Revlon Lip, Eye or Nail 40% off – The price – You will be paying around $1.99 after $1.00 off coupon. The coupon was found in last Sundays paper in the back of the Wal-mart flyer or you can go to riteaid.com watch the October video for Revlon and then you will get $1.00 coupon that you can print (video value coupon)
  • Cover Girl Cosmetics, buy one get one 50% off – The price – You will be paying around $1.54 after the buy one get one 50% off offer, and using (2) $1.00 off manufacturers coupons. You can find those coupons in the P&G inserts in your Sunday papers on 10-16 or 10-02. (The price was estimated from a product that originally cost $3.39)

These prices are valid until 10/22

Daily Challenge for Friday 10-21-11

The challenges for today are:

  • The 20 item pickup challenge – Start at one end of your house and make your way around into every single room, picking up 20 items in each room. This isn’t as hard as it sounds. Pick up and put away 20 items from every room. Some rooms might not have 20 items, just pick up what is there and move on to the next one. If your feeling like you can handle it, make your way into closets/laundry rooms/garages/ ect..
  • Pick a drawer challenge – We all have at least one messy drawer in our house. Wether it be a junk drawer full of pens and papers, a bathroom drawer collecting odds and ends, or a kitchen drawer cluttered with too much utensils. Pick one and organize it! Throw away the trash and give away items that are not being used.
  • Do a load of laundry!

You can do it!

Orange Halloween Punch

I found this recipe in an old Taste Of Home magazine. It was very easy, only 5 ingredients! The kids made it all on their own (we all know what a big deal that is). It was yummy and would be perfect for any Halloween party!

The ingredients are:

  • 1 can (46 oz.) pineapple juice, chilled
  • 3 cups lemon-lime soda, chilled
  • 3 cups orange drink
  • 2 liters ginger ale, chilled
  • 1/2 gallon orange sherbet

In a punch bowl, combine the juice, soda and orange drink. Stir in ginger ale. Top with scoops of sherbet. Serve immediately. (makes about 6 quarts)

Halloween Craft – Ghosts

I was looking through an old Halloween edition of Taste Of Home and I came across this cute and very easy craft. Here is a list of items you will need to make these ghosts:

  • Round white balloons
  • Cheesecloth –  Cut to lengths of about a yard. The Michaels by me did not carry cheesecloth but Wal-mart did.
  • Black permanent marker
  • Glow sticks (optional) We made them with glow sticks and without. They were cute both ways. The glow sticks did not last very long though.
  1. Activate a glow stick and insert it into a balloon. Then inflate and knot the balloon.
  2. Position the knot at the top of the balloon, and use the permanent marker to draw eyes and a mouth.
  3. Drape the cheesecloth over the balloon, cut a small hole and push the knot through the fabric. Secure with string (I used fishing line, we have a lot of that around here) and hang in the breeze

The kids had fun making these ghosts! (NOTE: I found that the balloons didn’t stay inflated for very long. This craft should be made on Halloween day)
